Muskie: Here's hoping that the peeps who were working on the tweaks to the old version can start making 1.1 even prettier (4K mode, anyone?) I have doubts any machine would be able to handle that. Keep in mind that (unless I'm mistaken) Outcast is still fully rendered by the CPU. Already in 1080p there's some notable performance drops even on powerful machines, a 4k resolution may fruther reduce the performance by like 75% I guess. There's always hope that the devs will eventually be able to make the game run in hardware mode, though.
Outcast EXPERIMENTAL OUTCAST HI-RES PATCH, UP TO 1280x768 CYANA LIGHTHOUSE PROBLEM FIXED 289 posts 289 posts Pages: 1. OUTCAST in HD High Definition. In all the patches there is offered an explanation English, The resolution patch. I show the version to you: HD-V3 100MB. Outcast: High-resolution patch URL.
Of course hardware accelleration isn't optimized for voxels at all but I can imagine that shaders might be used to render the voxels far more efficiently than it is possible via CPU rendering.
Guys, I could swear that I came across an experimental beta Outcast patch that redid the graphic drivers for the game so it could use D3D, high-resolution and even pixel shaders. I even remember that the water was pixel shaded. And I could SWEAR that I saw the link to that patch somewhere on Rage3D.
I can't find it for the life of me though.:bleh: I think that experimental patch would solve my brother's problems. You can't accelerate voxels. In any case, I do remember mention of that as well.
Byt the meps/models were converted to polygons. Maybe it wasn't even a patch, but a hack job sequel?
I do remember what you are talking about though. The water was 'pixel shaded' by default. And i don't think such patch exists. Nope, it DOES exist. I found the thread, after looking for everything under the sun related to Outcast on the PC gaming boards. Outcast Lives Forever (fan project) = That's the link (which currently isn't working, at least for me), and this is the thread: Like the thread says, you couldn't really play the game with that special patch, you could open maps and check them out in all their high-res glory, but that was a year ago, perhaps they've improved on it so that the game's playable.?:) edit: I still can't get to their site. I hope it's just my stupid ISP's fault and not that the server's actually down, but look at what else I found traipsing around the Net?:D That is an early beta version of Outcast that supported.
There's no such patch to add pixel shader. This engine doesn't support 3D acceleration. Scenes are made of voxels (3D pixel) and it runs purely on CPU. In 1999 when the game was release voxel engine was good alternative to standard. All previous Delta Force games and Comanche was made on Voxel Technology.
But 3D video card took off while CPU didn't and that's why no developers support Voxel engine anymore and I doubt they will. And the water is best looking even now.
I don't recall any game were water reacts that naturally to your character. Maybe water in today's games reflects all surrounding but behaves artificial.

Multiplayer.:D That was my post.;) But look like there is no future for this project.:( Outcast Lives Forever (fan project) Released for all peoples who like original OUTCAST game by Appeal DOWNLOAD: OCLFv102.exe (587,570 bytes) (new) DOWNLOAD: OCLFv101.exe (571,660 bytes) DOWNLOAD: oclf.rar (274,015 bytes) This is my implementation of Outcast's voxel engine based on latest hardware.
It's just a map viewer but this is look like original Outcast. In 1999 I have seen one new game 'Outcast', I was ammazed. In that time it was a greatest game as I can imagine. Unbeliveable gameplay and researches of greatest landscapes with a lot of NPC. There are big worlds with their history, culture and peoples.
You can speak with anyone, you can help them to do something. There are greate storyline. But it all was powered by unbeliveble software-based voxel engine with a lot of pixel effects like water, snow, fog, fire, etc. At that moment we didn't have any 3D accelerator which can do that. After the years, when I take a lot of experience in 3D engenering and engines development I have stared this project. I have cracked all Appeal's resources which can help me to do my own 3D engine and my own landscapes. So, I havn't a lot of free time, and first researches of Appeal's resources takes me about 3-4 months.
And now you can see this map viewer of original Outcast. When your see as your dreams comes true, your can't imagine at the moment as it greate. NOTE: version 1.01 - HDR rendering - All characters from the game - 1st and 3rd person views - Auto hardware detection - Bump mapping - Advanced water rendering - Soft shadows And more new features which will be interesting for all who like that game:) http://and.intercon.ru/.

It's more of an exe that you can use to play the maps using all the new-fangled 3D-accelerated hardware features. My memory was a little rusty, so I didn't remember the detail about it not being playable game-wise, only being able to surf the maps. But I did remember.:p And I do know that Voxel engines are all software-accelerated. I guess I didn't word myself right when I was all in a tizzy about finding this 'patch'.
I loved Delta Force, never played Comanche, and this game is by far one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. I've said it many times before, this is the only game that really makes you feel like you're on another planet. Let me plug Amazon here for a second: You can get this incredible game from Amazon for $10. $10, that's it. You OWE it to yourself, as a PC gamer, to play this game through AT LEAST once!:D. That was my post.;) But look like there is no future for this project.:( Oh damn it all to hell, you can access that site?!:mad:.ing Telkom Kenya, this is the third site that I can't access from home using their ADSL connection. The first site I can't get to is www.pcsx2.net, and recently, more annoyingly, www.amazon.co.uk.
Both sites access perfectly from a cybercafe using Swift Global though. Now I can't get to this site either?! WTF?! Would you do me a favor Ning and upload that OCLFv102.exe somewhere for me, since I can't access it?:bleh. OCLF is not a solution. I think you can't run the original game on it, only the maps on different engine, so no plot, no quests, no nothing in OCLF. I emailed the developer over a year ago and he said it's impossible to make it use all Outcast content because he doesn't have the original source code of Outcast. I think we've established that it's not the solution.
The only way to get the patch that increases resolution working is running the game in Win98, since the resolution patch doesn't work in 2K/XP. Still, I'm glad that I remembered this. It was eating at me. And it sucks major balls that the guy who wrote this little exe couldn't finish it because he didn't have the source code. Do you think that Infogrames would give him the source code now, if he asked for it nicely? It has been 7 years after all.:D. I just tried replaying Outcast, however I encountered what was a show stopping bug for me.

For some reason when I tried to walk through the swampy areas in Shamazaar it was horrendously slow. We're talking maybe one virtual inch a minute. It basically made that region unplayable since you can't really get around or fight effectively without going in the swamps.
Otherwise the game was normal - very weird. Anyone encounter this problem or know of a fix? I was playing the game years ago and never encounter this kind of problem.
Try Open Outcast forum their write something about this program to 'downgrade' your CPU because of bugs:confused. That's not entirely true - you.can. accelerate voxel calculations, the only difference is that modern gfx cards simply don't do it.
I didn't mean that you can't build specified hardware for that kind of calculation, because you can for like everything. I meant that those video cards on the market firsty were build only to filtertexure etc. Then NVIDIA added T&L for transforming and lighting then come Pixel and Vertex Shader(3.0 and above) with in some way you could program to make other calculation.
Not via DirectX or OpenGL by independent API which gives you access to GPU resources. There isn't a way to go past 640x480, but you can use this and see what the game would look like in reses up to 1600x1200:D This is my implementation of Outcast's voxel engine based on latest hardware.
