Click to expand.Speedtree has a LOD system which switches the 3d tree into a 2d sprite based on the camera distance to the tree. Don't know about the grass, but I'd suspect it works on a billboards/2d plane meshes too. The Speedtree Compiler will make series of textures for the billboard meshes, along with normal maps and you don't have to do it yourself, everything is automatic.

The only thing that is up to you is to actually get your engine to use the tree asset. In UE 3 it's rather easy because of the Speedtree integration. The modeling software also generates bones for the tree branches, meaning that it is possible for the tree to move when something moves through it.
